In the The Shining, what does the photograph at the end of the film mean?

That's the photo at the very end of the film. I looked it up on wikipedia but it doesn't really explain very well how this is significant in relation to the rest of the movie. -
"Just before the end credits, the audience sees a photograph of a lavish ball which had been hanging in the hotel the entire time. In the center of the picture is a young Jack; the caption reads: "Overlook Hotel, July 4th Ball, 1921"."
So what is the photograph's significance?
Sorry about the the extra 'the' in the question. Just a typing error.
The first two answerers got it wrong. The twist was that the man in that photo was the previous caretaker of the Overlook. That's the whole thing so you can say that Jack taking the position of the new caretaker was either fate or maybe he was the reincarnation of the first caretaker. It's meant to be chilling because it's showing you that the previous caretaker of the Overlook resembled Jack Torrance to a "T" and that for all we know that caretaker could have been him or vice-versa.
So really you have themes of possesion, reincarnation, predestiny, etc. But no it had nothing to do with the hotel consumed him and put him in the picture, that's just plain rubbish. But once again the thing that you were meant to conclude was that the man in the picture who looked like Jack was in fact the caretaker of the Overlook at that time.
