The solid purple Heuchera cultivars leave most people speechless. They are simply stunning and are great as color opposites for brightly colored plants. Below is a description of some of the best solid purple Heucheras on the market today. Check out other articles in our Heuchera series for the description of other Heuchera groups such as yellow or red varieites.

Heuchera 'Black Beauty' PP 13288 PVR: This 2002 Terra Nova introduction boasts very dark purple-black heavily-ruffled leaves on a 16" wide clump. Perfect for the "black" garden. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-8a, Ht. 10")

Heuchera 'Blackout' PPAF: Heuchera 'Blackout' from Belgium's Dirk Scheys is the blackest of the coral bells. The glossy jet black leaf with a purple underside forms a vigorous but compact clump to 18" wide by 1' tall. In the garden it should be blended with gold foliage plants and light airy textures for best effect. The clumps are topped with spikes of small white flowers in spring. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-7, Ht. 12")

Heuchera 'Cappuccino': This new Heims introduction has the most chocolatey foliage that I have seen. The leaves are more flattened than those of Heuchera 'Chocolate Ruffles'. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-9, Ht. 12")

Heuchera micrantha 'Bressingham Bronze': From England's Blooms of Bressingham, comes Heuchera 'Bressingham Bronze'...a selected seedling from Heuchera Palace Purple for exceptional color and vigor. The vivid purple evergreen foliage holds year round. In early summer the clumps are topped with tiny white flowers. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-8, Ht. 12")

Heuchera 'Obsidian' PP 14,: This Terra Nova introduction boasts glossy black-purple leaves that form a 10" tall by 16" wide clump. In late spring, the clumps are topped with 2' tall spikes of insignificant whitish flowers...grow this for the foliage. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 5-7 at least, Ht. 10")

Heuchera 'Peacock Feathers': This new sport of Heuchera 'Plum Pudding' boast an unusual leaf shape, resembling...well, a peacock feather. The much narrower than normal glossy dark purple leaves adorn the 20" wide clump, topped in mid-spring with 2' tall flower spikes. This is a real attention-getter since it looks completely different from other coral bells. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-9, Ht. 12")

Heuchera 'Plum Royale' PPAF: Glossy purple foliage with darker purple veins does not fade during the year. Silver tints emerge in the winter. Pinkish flowers.

Heuchera 'Prince': This new coral bell is composed of very ruffled dark purple leaves on a 15" wide clump. In late spring the clump is topped with airy spikes of ivory white flowers. Good drainage is essential to growing good Heuchera. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-8, Ht. 12")

Heuchera 'Purple Petticoats' EU 5885: Simply superb! I think this new Dan Heims introduction is destined to become one of the best from the entire line of coral bells. The solid dark purple leaf has an intensely ruffled edge...simply dramatic! A mass of Heuchera 'Purple Petticoats' by a blue hosta would be striking! As on most Heuchera americana hybrids, the flowers are insignificant. (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-9, Ht. 12")

Heuchera 'Starry Night' PP 16,076, PVR: Heuchera 'Starry Night' is a new Terra Nova hybrid with dark black-purple leaves on a 14" wide clump. In late spring, the clumps are topped with nice 16" tall flower spikes of white and light pink bicolor flowers...quite a show! (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-7, Ht. 7")

Heuchera 'Velvet Knight': The foliage on this Dan Heims selection is dark purple with red veining, giving the appearance of crushed velvet overlay...I don't know how he did it! Heuchera 'Velvet Knight' is striking near blue-foliaged hostas. When established, the 18" wide clump will have 7" wide leaves! (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-9, Ht. 12")

Heuchera 'Vesuvius' PP 13215 PVR: This new introduction was the top performer in the Terra Nova 2000 Heuchera trials...and after seeing their trial gardens, that's saying something. The dark purple foliage is topped in early summer with hundreds of spikes of brilliant red flowers...an object d'art in the garden! (Part Sun to Light Shade, Zone 4-9, Ht. 12")
