Photo work in California?
Ok so one day after University I would love to go over to California to work and live. I'm hoping to study Press & Editorial photography at Falmouth University here in the UK. This is all just a wild ambition at the moment but I was just wondering what kind of photo work you can get in California and how hard it is to come by. Thing I'm worried about is that my photography isn't the kind of commercial studio portrait stuff, or family portrait sort of thing that you can imagine making mega bucks from, I have a more documentary sort of style and I don't think it would be very easy to make money from this anywhere in the world, let alone in California.
So what I'm really asking I guess, is does anybody on here make money from this sort of photography?

Having just moved FROM California (the San Francisco Bay Area to be specific), I wish I could tell you the prognosis for Press & Editorial Photographers in California was good. Alas--it's not. In fact, California is in trouble from the top-down (starting with the Government) and right now it's one of the roughest job markets, in general, right now.
Newspapers are on shaky ground, and all the news and editorial photographers I know--and who are still in the business--worry almost daily if they'll have a job come the end of the month (not to mention year). There are too few jobs for newspaper photographers, and for every one that opens up, there's a glut of out-of-work veteran shooters competing with the new grads for that position.
This is not to say that it's impossible. I try to be optimistic and still believe that anything is possible. Just keep in mind that it's a very rough time for news photographers. As long as you know and understand this--know what you're getting yourself into; your dedication, perseverance--and that ever-important "little bit of luck" might land one of those coveted newsie-shooter jobs.
However--you might want to consider another state than California... Keep monitoring the news as you finish your studies. Things just might improve--economically-speaking over the next couple of years.
