Every photographer will spend a different amount of time posing people before taking the shot. In the end, it's more about a photographer's personality than about how long is spent posing. As long as the client is happy with the amount of attention each shot receives, that's the most important thing.
Zero Planning
This is the starting point for most amateurs. They see something that looks interesting and they shoot it as it is. It's hard to get these images to look professional because most of these end up looking like random snapshots. Photojournalists shoot moments "as they are", but only a few posses the skill required to make a candid moment look truly amazing.
Burden On Client
In an attempt to get pictures to look more natural, some photographers let the client do their own posing. The challenge with this approach is that a client may not be particularly good at posing on their own. It's also difficult for a client to see exactly how they look to know what they need to change about their pose to get it to look good.
Basic Direction
Using this method, photographers will indicate a location and general pose for the client. As soon as the client gets in position, the camera clicks and it's on to the next pose. Many of these pictures end up looking slightly awkward, but it's often tough to put your finger on exactly what you don't like about the picture.
Instruct And Adjust
Building on the basic direction posing, photographers may take it to the next level and adjust the pose before clicking the camera. A hand may look out of place or there may be a double chin. For an experienced poser, these issues can be easily fixed to make the shot even better.
Attention To Detail
If a hair is out of place or a tie is crooked, a photographer with a personality that pays attention to tiny details will fix it. These guys aren't known for their speed. A single pose may take quite a few minutes to set up, adjust, and readjust until it's perfect.
