The First Steps
You need to get a domain name first. This doesn't get you a website - just a name. Your domain name will be the name of your website. For example; your domain name will be located between the www and the .com area of your url address in the address bar of your browser. A domain name usually costs about $10 a year and you can get one at the GoDaddy site.
You will then need to chose a web host with a hosting company. A hosting company connects your website to the World Wide Web. Every website needs a hosting account and can cost $10 a month or more depending on your needs. I highly recommend going to the HostGator site.
Once you have your domain name and hosting account, you will need a web editor software. This software is recognized by all hosting companies and converts text and content that you write on your computer at home into "computer language" for your hosting company to understand. Kompozer is a web editor software that's easy to learn and is user friendly. It's also FREE. You can download it at the kompozer site.
After you download Kompozer, open it and close the small 'tip box' that appears. Click on "Format" at the top of the page and select "Page Titles and Properties". In the Title box, type in what you want to call your website. For example: My test Site. Click "ok". You just named your first website! Click the save icon at the top to save your changes.
Now you can start typing in content. For practice purposes, type in a small paragraph about yourself or something describing what your website will be about. If you want to see how the computer language will look like, you can click on the source tab at the bottom. You will see that you don't even need to know HTML as it's already done for you! You see?! It really is easy making a website. Getting excited yet?!
