So, you've decided to go on safari; the next big decision is choosing when to go. A safari holiday is rarely anything less than an extravagance so it is important that you get your timing right.

Dry Season vs. Wet Season

Generally the best time to go on safari is during the dry months, so for Kenya and Tanzania this means from June to September and December to February. During this time water is scarce in wildlife parks and so wild animals tend to stick to the small areas that do have water. The vegetation is also much more sparse making wildlife generally easier to spot. July and August are generally the best months for game viewing, coinciding with the annual wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara.

Travelling during the rainy season is no problem. However, since there is plenty of water to go around at this time of year, animals can be spread over a much larger area. There are two rainy seasons: a long one in April and May and a short one from mid-October until the end of November. Don't worry, you don't have to expect torrential rainfall... but it can be cloudy with short burst of rain in the afternoon and at night so don't forget to pack your poncho! There are also real bonuses with travelling during this period, as in the absence of other travellers, hotel and other prices are generally reduced and people also generally have time to pay you a bit more attention.

The Great Migration

The great migration is without doubt one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world and works great in combination with a Masai Mara tour. Each year, millions of wildebeest trek across the vast plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania towards Kenya's Masai Mara. In their wake, predators roam the savannah in search of the weaker animals. The peak takes place in July and August with Wildebeest crossing the Grumeti River towards the Masai Mara. As you can imagine, nature doesn't follow strict schedules but generally speaking, most years they will stick to their usual pattern:

December, January, February

Large herds located in the SE corner of the Serengeti - Birthing season for wildebeest and zebras

March, April

Beginning of the rainy season - large herds trek towards the Serengeti

May, June

The best season (through August) to see the migration - large herds trek from south to west of the Serengeti

July, August

Herds cross the Grumeti River towards the Masai Mara

September, October

Beginning of the dry season, large herds spend most of their time in the Masai Mara

November

Beginning of the (short) rainy season - large herds trek back towards the Serengeti.
