Hiking the AT in the Smokies?
My brother and I are planning on Hiking the Appalachain Trail in the smokies coming up in the near future. We would like to start on the far east side (Near Big Creak) and ending on the far west side (Near Fontana Dam)
We would like to drop our car off at the beginning and take a bus back to the car. Is that possible? Anyone have any tips about hiking the smokies?
I did part of your planned hike and would reccomend you start just off of N.C.28 . Somewhere between Stecoah &Lauada (U.S.19/74) there is a rafting outfitter;their parking lot is within 100 yards+/- of the AT.From there you can hike to Fontanna Dam and one of the nicest Trail shelters.. There are hot showers at the dam. Continue North to Shuckstack ( tough climb) then on to Clingman's Dome Lookout tower Down the trail a short way is a nice shelter in a spruce forest .Half(?) a days hike on you come toTo U.S.441 and a "real" bathroom. At THAT point you can go north via auto to Gatlinburg,Tenn. or south to to Waynesville ,N.C.If you stop at the Gap you have a good chance of getting a ride down to Gatlinburg. Not many autos go south to ward Waynesville but it is on the way to Cherokee & tourists do head that way. I don't believe you should plan on any bus service.This works well if you have 2 vehicles & ferry from put in to take out. If you HAVE to end at Fontana,you can leave a car there Also. However the view from top of Shuckstack is worth the climb. BTW ...get your legs in shape!
