I knew Keith Brown when I lived in Scotland and he appeared to be a nice guy with solid principles and a sound work ethic. It is gratifying to see him now promoted to Transport Minister in Scotland and expect him to show the same level of intelligent application to that role as he has done to others. But it won't be easy. He has accepted what is arguably the toughest job in modern politics, to meet head on the challenge of Scotland's weather! I lived in Scotland for ten years and got to appreciate why they call it God's country, with its beautiful lochs and glens, but the weather I have to tell you comes straight from the devil.
The recent falls of snow have broken new records and brought the country to a standstill, an unfortunate scenario for Keith's predecessor but the question has to be asked - is there any logistical solution to the hazards of nature when they arrive in such a torrent? It is said that other countries with more snow seem to manage well enough. I wish Keith luck in discovering how.
Scotland has shown stolid resistance in the past to greater evils - Julius Caesar, the march of the English and the recent ire of the US ambassador following the release of Lockerbie bomber al-Megrahi. Keith's boss, First Minister Alex Salmond, has on more than one occasion been described as truculent, but this is perfectly in keeping with the fire the Scots have in their belly to become a nation recognised, not as England's poorer neighbour, but in its own right and for its own principles. They have stood firm on free education, aspire to a fairer system of taxation and recently found success in gaining foreign investment in a massive wind farm project which will provide clean energy for many. At a time when it is unclear quite what the Coalition Government in Westminster stands for, it is refreshing to see an administration north of the border that still has a noble vision for the future.
Keith Brown should be proud of his achievement today and proud to be part of a party that, regardless of recession or deficit, won't give up on its dreams of a fair and just society. There are lessons to be learnt here for others too quick to retract political promises the moment they get a whiff of the sweet scent of power!
