Gods Colorado
Garden of the Gods seemed to me like the kind of name that would be reserved to one park, but that's not the case. There are actually two.
One of the "Gardens" is in Colorado Springs, Colorado and is absolutely beautiful. At the base of the mountains, near the military base, the reddish colored rocks rise up above the brown and green surroundings. The immense rock formations here are meant more as eye candy and less as climbable rocks. But just beyond the monolithic formations at the park's entry are trails into the beautiful Colorado Rockies. There are oodles of fun trails to climb that both kids and parents will love. This is not the kind of park to take rock climbing enthusiasts - but a wonderful place to take families and out of town guests.
The other Garden of the Gods is in southern Illinois pretty close to the Ohio River. It's not like the Colorado version at all, in fact it feels a lot like every other state park in the Midwest. Small parking lot where a trail sign rests and then a trailhead fading off into the woods. No imposing rocks, nothing red. This park is more of a hiker's park where really cool rock formations dot the sides of the trail. At one point you pass a rock that looks like its made of a thin layer that was rolled, rolled, rolled into a big rock - with the rolls still showing.
Either way, both are great parks to take the family for a picnic.
