What are the best places to visit at the Golden gate park, I'm taking my children and mom.?
I'm planning a trip to the Golden Gate Park with my kids and mom. My kid's ages range from 4-12 yrs. old. My mom can't walk for a long period of time. Is the park very big? What do you recommend for us? I want my mom to enjoy the trip as well as my children.
Golden Gate Park is about the size of Central Park in New York. So, it is quite large. Different areas of the park are dedicated to specific activities. These include the archery range, boating center, soccer field, football stadium, horse stables, golf course, tennis courts, etc.
However, most tourists head directly for the cultural precinct near the 9th Avenue entrance. And why not?
This is a compact, easily accessed area (with lots to see). The following attractions are arranged around the Music Concourse:
- The DeYoung Museum is dedicated mostly to American art. There are also anthropological exhibits focusing on South America, Africa, and Oceania. This is not a kid-friendly attraction. Though adults might find it interesting. Admission is $10 for adults and $6 for children.
- The California Academy of Sciences is great fun for the entire family. This is one of the nation's top natural history museums. The academy recently underwent a 300 million dollar renovation. And it certainly looks good. Aside from the usual dioramas and skeletons - there's a huge aquarium, walkthrough rainforest, living roof, and planetarium. Admission is $24.95 for adults and $14.95 for children. This might seem high, but it is worth every dime.
-There's a small Shakespere garden. It contains plants from all of his plays. No admission fee.
- Although it is quite small as well, the Japanese Tea Garden is an excellent example of a Kyoto style garden. The teahouse is also a nice place to relax. Admission is $3.50 for adults and $1.25 for children.
- The Strybing Arboretum and Bontanical Garden is just south of the tea garden. This is a very large garden. With lots of winding paths and blooming flowers from around the world. There are benches and pavillions. If you need to find the way out, a good geographical marker is the fountain and lawn (you can see the main entrance from here). No admission fee.
