I'm going with the latter, because the 3 best films with Marlon Brando, are not his best work, imo.

1. Reflections in a Golden Eye ( his most subtle brilliance )
2. A Streetcar Named Desire *
3. On the Waterfront
* It's kinda sad...
I read that Brando, was so turned-off by Hollywood, that after "Streetcar" -- he desperately wanted to return to the New York Stage.
Despite so many extraordinary performances on film -- I wish he could have pursued his true desires.

I would like to add that "Apocalypse Now" ranks as one of the Greatest "Brief" performances on Film !!
There will never be another Brando, Bogart, or Cagney, imo.
I always imagine, "What would have happened, if James Dean, had done more than 3 movies?"
