why is the washington monument peaked?
i have a history assignment where i have to do a question on any u.s history topic. this is my topic. i've heard (from a tour guide in D.C) that it's peaked because he's the only president (with a memorial) to have reached the height of his career. meaning that he wasn't assassinated like jfk or lincoln. problem is ,is that i can't find that anywhere. help?
That explanation seems highly unlikely to me, for the simple reason that it's wrong. There are five presidents with memorials in DC: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Franklin Roosevelt. Of these five, only Lincoln was assassinated, and the only other one who died in office was Franklin Roosevelt. Furthermore, the Washington Monument was the first memorial to a president. When it was conceived, none of the four had been president yet (although it wasn't completed until after Lincoln had been president).
