Decorating your home in a shabby chic style can add a lot of design, warmth and visual appear. When decorating in this style, don't forget to include the foyer. The mixture of designs, colors and textures that are common with the shabby chic decorating style can really add a welcoming look to the foyer area. Hardware is one decorating feature that can be easily overlooked, but which can be quite effective when creating the shabby chic look. Many times you can add a nice well-worn look to a room, simply by swapping out contemporary hardware and fixtures with vintage finds. If you want to add a bit of shabby style to your home's entryway area, here are some decorating tips that can help get you started.
Planning Your Shabby Chic Style
Although this style of decorating often has a somewhat random appearance, it's actually more effective if you do a bit of pre-planning. If you already have this style throughout the rest of your home, then it should be easy to add accessories that will help your foyer blend right in. Try to pick up some of the same colors, without making it seem as though you are trying too hard to get everything to "match." You might not even need to purchase any new furniture items or accessories for the foyer, especially if you have some unused items in your attic. Instead of purchasing a new table, add a fresh coat of cream or white paint to an old writing desk. Add a few antiquing touches, such as scuffing the paint along the edges of the desk to make it appear "well-worn," or using an antiquing stain over the paint. Replacing the original hardware with vintage hardware pieces can also add a great look.
Great Decorating Tricks with Vintage Hardware
Because vintage hardware pieces often have a more interesting appearance than their contemporary counterparts, they can be an important part of your decorating scheme. Swapping out handles, drawer pulls, knobs and hinges with older versions can be quite easy and inexpensive. It's also a great way to utilize hardware pieces that you may have saved from previously discarded furniture items. Utilizing old hardware can be even easier when decorating in a shabby chic style, because you don't have to worry as much about getting hardware that matches. Try removing shiny knobs and handles, replacing them with pewter, copper and brass pieces. Or, add old metal hooks to a board to create a handy hook shelf rack in the foyer area. Hardware pieces can also be used in surprising new ways, such as screwing drawer pulls onto a wooden board to create a peg rack. You can even create interesting photo frames by gluing old pieces of hardware around plain wood or painted frames. You can add to the overall look by replacing your front door knob with an antique variety. When replacing existing furniture hardware with vintage pieces, you might find that the holes in the furniture do not match up to the where the hardware screws need to be. If this is the case, simply fill the existing holes, paint the furniture, and drill new holes for your vintage hardware.
