Why didnt people take photographs back in the 1400s or 1500s ?
Why were they so backwards in technology? if we had photos it would be more easy for us to understand real history !!!!
Photography didn't really exist until the 1830's.
How and why civilizations progress is usually a story of circumstances and chance -and not one of planned design.
Who knows, if the Roman Empire didn't fall in the 4th century maybe the west would have had the industrial revolution a thousand years earlier. The Romans had the windmill, the water wheel and understood the principals the steam engine (the first steam turbine was built by a Greek in the 1st century BCE). But because slaves were so cheap and plentiful the mechanical means of producing work were not economical.
Photographs are a wonderful tool in understanding history but only one of many. Remember the camera rarely shows the truth because the image on film is often manipulated. Even in the earliest days of photography -most Civil War photographs of the battlefield dead were posed. The dead were moved and placed for the best possible picture. And those photographs that didn't fit the photographer's narrative usually were lost or destroyed.
The best history lesson I ever got was living under primitive conditions in a one room structure with no electricity, running water or modern conveniences. After that when I read history it had a new meaning. It's hard to advance when you spend most your time looking for food and firewood. Luckily we live in a time where food is cheap and abundant, and even average people can spend a portion of their time learning and intellectually advancing the society. 500 years ago only the richest and most elite had any chance at an education and 95% of the population lived in what we would consider deep poverty.
History is a story supported by a few facts and plenty of arguments. Since we can not go back in time we can only often give it our best guess.
