When you add your digital photos to a stock photography websites, you are always asked to add keywords or tags, and to assign your image to various categories. How do you make a list of effective keywords for your photographs?
When I first began uploading my photos to stock photography websites, I had a hard time coming up with even the minimum count for some of my photos. How could I expect multiple downloads when there were less than 10 ways a person could find my photo? Here are a few ideas of how you can generate a large list of effective keywords for your photographs.
- Start with big, generic terms. Include the OBVIOUS. If your photo is a close up of red roses, for example, "red", "red roses", "roses" and "flowers" are three obvious ones.
- Work smaller, still sticking with the actual item photographed. If using the Red Roses photo, you will want to add every possible term you can think of (or google) that has to do with the actual flower itself. Think "petals", "bud", "rose-bud", etc.
- Move into the conceptual word realm, but still think of the image itself. I find it helps to think of "who / what / where / when / why / how" answers. Try to come up with as many words (or phrases) as you can to answer each question. "Who?" - date, husband, etc. "What?" gift, bride, bouquet, etc. "Where?" florist, garden, etc. "When?" Valentine's Day, Wedding, etc. and the list goes on.
- Conceptualize DEEPER. Look at the picture, and ask how it makes you feel. What EMOTIONS does it pull? Red Roses makes people think of love, romance, femininity, etc. Use these as tags and keywords for your photographs as well.
- Put the shoe on the other foot, so to speak. Pretend you are a designer of some brochure, and need an image for it (one exactly like the photo you are uploading, of course). Can you outline a word map to get the designer to find YOUR photo in the midst of the thousands in the catalogue?
Getting the proper tags and effective keywords for your photographs will help your photos get seen and downloaded often! Uploading them at more than one stock photography website very important, however, as the more photos you upload, the more views and downloads you get!
