In today's economy it's crucial to get the most you can for your spending dollar. So there's no sane reason to over pay for Star Photograph when there are a wide assortment of them for sale on eBay. I have a NIKKOR 18 mm - 55 mm lens. Can I photograph the stars at night?
You bet!
You will however need a steady tripod. Night photography can be tricky to get the best exposure, but a little experience can render some great shots.
A couple of tips:
Try staying away from city or yard lights, as you exposure progresses this extra light can ruin a great shot, (it can also make it spectacular).
If you have a cable release, use it. Your camera needs to be very still to capture a crisp image. (if you don't have one, try using your cameras timer)
The more wide angle your shot, the longer your exposure to create visible results. ex: at 18 mm your stars will appear smaller than at 55 mm
note: 55 mm is about the aspect that the naked eye sees
If you would like to do that cool streaking effect divide 700 over the focal length of your lens to get the minimum exposure time to see some streaking results. (longer times obviously produce longer streaks)
ex: 700 ÷ 50 mm lens = 14 seconds
As a starting point try shooting at ƒ11. This gives some crispness to your images. You can increase or decrease your aperature depending on those results.
There is a lot of equipment out there to help you with celestial photography, but to keep it simple the tripod is your most important investment.
