Many people think that George Stephenson invented the first steam train and in a way he did, but also he did not!
Are you confused?
Firstly, a steam train and a steam engine do not mean the same thing! However, a steam train has a steam engine to drive it. The question about who invented the first steam train can be answered by going back in history to 1AD.
Hero of Alexandria has been given the credit for really starting it all off. He has the first recording of a device called the "Aeolipile" which is a turning ball driven around by steam. So the steam engine is nothing new.
However it took a long time to really be developed into what we now know as the train.
A few hundred years later in 1551 to be exact, Taqui al-Din started playing around with steam turbines and more work was also done in 1629 by Giovanni Branca.
Thomas Savery really updated work done by Denis Papin who invented the steam "digester" when he brought out his steam powered engine in 1698.
A few years later Thomas Newcomen brought out the very first commercial engine with any success in 1712 which ran on coal and his system was improved by James Watt who rebuilt it to use about 70% less coal making much cheaper to run.
And now comes the man who is really credited with the first steam train. Richard Trevithick built a high pressure engine in 1800 and this was the very first system that could really be used for transportation.
The system he designed actually pulled over 70 men and 10 tons of coal over 10 miles on February 21 in 1804 and the then very dangerous speed of 5 miles per hour!
This was a good 20 years before George Stephenson even put pen to paper.
George Stephenson was around at this time working on his own inventions and designing his own engine and he managed to beat Hedley and Hackworth in the race to bring out the new improved version.
In 1813, George, brought out his "Blucher" which traveled at a massive 4 miles per hour and this was the very first train driven by steam that actually ran on rails.
In 1825, Stephenson built the Stockton to Darlington railway which was one of the first "proper" commercial trains in the world. I actually lived in Stockton as a child, so this line has always been very close to me. Stockton station used to be an incredibly impressive building and a monument to rail history. They destroyed it years ago, by removing the roof. What a loss!
Stephenson's famous "Rocket" was not built until 1829 and he built it together with his son. They were also credited for designing the first spoke to wheel piston system.
So going back to our original quest...Who built the first steam train? Well the credit must actually go to Richard Trevithick for the first train, but Stephenson gets the credit for the first steam train on rails, so I guess in a way they both invented the steam train.
