Shopping for clothes is, for a lot of men, one of those things that is really the concern of women. Fairly or not, the image of the husband trailing behind his wife carrying her bags from shop to shop as she looks for that perfect pair of shoes is entrenched in the popular imagination.
And if that's one stereotype we can all recognise, how about this: a women fussing over her man until he looks smart enough to go out.
So it would be fair to say that, for a lot of men, our relationship to fashion and clothes is complicated. But that picture is slowly changing. While many men might not be prepared to drag themselves around town looking for that elusive pair of jeans, it seems that we are a lot more prepared to spend hours in front of computers flicking through web pages. There's no public scrutiny of our choices and we can safely indulge our passion for trying to shave pennies off the cost of something we really like by shopping around without leaving our chair.
The first thing to do is to actually figure out what looks good on you. This is the toughest phase in your quest for fashion dominance! The first step is to actually swallow your pride and ask for advice - starting with your Significant Other. Having seen the many articles you've worn during your time together they'll have a pretty good idea of what looks good on you. Another place to start is to (shock horror!) check out the style magazines. They'll show you what kind of things are actually fashionable right now, and most of them give you pointers as to where you can buy the things you see.
A few tips always hold true though:
- Dress your age! One of the most common failings that men make is to wear the same things they wore when they were young. Guys, let's face it: the eighties are over.
- Dress for your size! Unless you're lucky or a dedicated fan of keeping in shape, then you might be carrying a few spare pounds. Don't try and squeeze into lycra!
So where should the fashion hungry male start his search? Well a good bet is the kind of names you're familiar with from the high street. Here in the UK that means chains like Top Man, Republic, Burtons and Next - all of whom sell a full range of clothing online.
But don't stop at the obvious places. If you've found something you like the look of, then it's time to start shopping around! Firstly, if you've got the product name and brand, a quick search on a service like Google Shopping will let you find the cheapest price for that particular product. Cooler still, you can dig around the sites that come up and often find alternatives that are similar in style but at lower prices. Most websites have a sale section where recently discontinued lines are sold at rock bottom prices.
If even these bargains are beyond the reach of your wallet, then supermarkets have started cashing in on the latest styles by getting near-copies of the latest designs made in the Far East. So check out the supermarket websites.
Regardless of your approach and budget, make sure you keep all email receipts, correspondance and so on. Things that looked good in your imagination at 8pm from the sofa with a beer in hand might not look so good in the flesh! All sites have to keep details of their returns policy, so make sure you read that while you're ordering too.
Above all else, treat it as FUN. Shopping for clothes doesn't necessarily have to be a chore - you can cut loose a little, try some styles out and remember that you too can look pretty decent if you dress up once in a while.
