Is it hard to apply judo to real life street fights or mma fights?
Would judo work against punches and various strikes? I'm talking about street fight where opponent most of the time is untrained. Don't worry im just about self-defense. (currently im taking judo for 2 months)
Jason and others have an opinion, which is good. But I can tell you from personal experience. Judo works against anything if you know how to apply what you have been taught. Judo is built around using an opponents actions against them. If they try to hit, push or pull you, you use their momentum to throw them. You can also use whatever they have extended to to throw, choke, or as a joint lock. Judo has become an Olympic sport, but it was originally taught for self defense. I had an instructor that taught the difference in tournament judo and traditional judo. Being a small guy when I was in my teens I was 4'11 to 5'7 95lbs to 132lbs over those 4 years. Much bigger guys thought they could walk over me or bully me if the didn't know me. Using judo they learned that I was not a guy that you wanted to start trouble. I gained a reputation and that help to keep other from trying me. It was always some new 6' plus guy over 200lbs that had to get thrown or choked out.
Judo today is popular in mma. It is one of the discipline used if a person does not choose to train in jiu jitsu for mma.
I hope you keep in mind that mma and self defense tactics are not the same thing. If you want to learn self defese go to a place that teaches self defense. If you want to compete in a combat sport like mma go train in a place that teaches mma.
