What is the velocity of a train engine and a boxcar after an inelastic collision?
A train engine weighs 5 times as much as a boxcar. If the engine coasts at 3 km/hr into the boxcar that is initially at rest and becomes coupled to the boxcar, how fast do the two move after the inelastic collision?
First ask yourself, "What am I solving for?" In this case, you are solving for "v prime" and given m1 = 5m2. v1= 3 km/hr. v2 = 0 m/s.
m2 = m2 i guess.
Starting with the equation:
m1v1+m2v2 = m1v1 + m2v2 (Notice that the two "v's" after the equal sign should say "v prime." I didn't want to confuse you though). Since "v2" is initially at rest, it has a velocity of ZERO, allowing you to cross the v2 and m2 out.
*So, after completing the algebra step, v prime is equal to: (m1v1) / (m1 + m2). Now sub in numbers, and I got v prime to be: 2.5 km/hr
